Bunny Proofing your House

🧵 1. Protect Cables (Rabbits LOVE chewing wires)

  • Use cord covers, split-loom tubing, or PVC pipe.

  • Lift hanging wires completely out of reach.

  • Block access to entertainment centers or desks where wires are clustered.

  • Never rely on “training”—chewing wires is instinctual.

🪵 2. Cover or Protect Baseboards & Furniture Legs

  • Use plastic corner guards or clear baseboard covers.

  • If your bunny targets a specific area, place a wooden chew toy near that spot.

  • Wrap chair/table legs with seagrass mats or sisal rope.

🪑 3. Shield Furniture & Carpets

  • Place washable blankets, fleece throws, or area rugs over spots your rabbit digs or chews.

  • Use plastic office chair mats over carpet where they like to dig.

  • Provide dig boxes so they have an alternative (shredded paper, blankets, hay).

🌿 4. Block Off Dangerous Areas

Use:

  • Baby gates

  • Pen panels

  • Storage cubes connected with zip ties (popular with rabbit owners)

Block access to:

  • Under beds/couches (they get stuck or chew fabric)

  • Behind refrigerators/washers/dryers

  • Rooms with too many temptations

🌡️ 5. Watch Temperature & Vent Spaces

  • Rabbits overheat easily; keep rooms 60–72°F (15–22°C).

  • Ensure vents and AC units are protected from chewing.

💩 6. Litter-Train and Protect Floors

  • Provide multiple litter boxes if the rabbit has run of the house.

  • For persistent marking, use washable pee-proof mats.

  • Clean accidents with vinegar-water to remove scent.

🍪 7. Remove Toxic Plants & Household Hazards

Move out of reach:

  • Toxic plants (most lilies, pothos, philodendron, etc.)

  • Cleaning products

  • Human food and pet food

  • Medications

  • Small ingestible objects (rubber bands, buttons, etc.)

🔌 8. Provide Lots of Enrichment

This reduces destructive behavior:

  • Hay 24/7 (the #1 boredom reducer)

  • Cardboard boxes/tunnels

  • Chew toys (apple wood sticks, seagrass, untreated pine)

  • Dig boxes

  • Forage toys or pellet feeders

A bored rabbit = a destructive rabbit.

🐇 9. Observe Their Favorite Trouble Spots

Every rabbit has “problem areas.”Watch where they:

  • Dig

  • Chew

  • Hide

  • Squeeze into small spaces

Then modify those areas with blockers or covers.

🛋️ 10. Make Safe, Cozy Zones

Give them:

  • A hidey house

  • A soft area or rug

  • A predictable space they're comfortable in

A relaxed bunny is less likely to chew out of anxiety.
